Movement in the arts in 18th-century Europe,
a trend towards lightness, elegance,
delicacy, and decorative charm. The term
`Rococo' refers to rocaille, a style of
interior decoration based on S-curves and
scroll-like forms. Watteau's paintings and
Sevres porcelain belong to the French Rococo
vogue. In the 1730s the movement became
widespread in Europe, notably in the churches
and palaces of S Germany and Austria. Other
Rococo features include the use of fantastic
ornament, such as Grotesque and chinoiserie,
and pretty, naturalistic details.
Architectural and decorative ensembles, such
as the Amalienburg pavilion at Nymphenburg
near Munich, West Germany, and the Hotel de
Soubise pavilion in Paris, exemplify the
movement. The painters Boucher and Fragonard
both painted typically decorative Rococo
panels for Parisian hotels (town houses).
